Midjourney Medical Unveils ‘Ultrasonic CT’ in Massive $74M Deal with Butterfly Network

Midjourney, the company best known for its generative AI image platform, is pivoting into physical healthcare hardware. Through its newly formed subsidiary, Midjourney Medical, the company has announced a $74 million partnership with digital health firm Butterfly Network to develop a rapid, full-body medical imaging scanner.

The multi-year agreement aims to combine Butterfly Network’s proprietary ultrasound-on-a-chip technology with Midjourney’s advanced AI imaging models. The goal is to create a physical scanning device capable of delivering full-body diagnostic insights in just 60 seconds, a process the companies are calling an “Ultrasonic CT” scan.

Inside the Tech: Ultrasound-on-a-Chip Meets AI

Traditional CT (Computed Tomography) scans rely on ionizing radiation and massive, expensive machinery. In contrast, the proposed Midjourney Medical scanner utilizes Butterfly Network’s semiconductor-based ultrasound technology. By shrinking traditional ultrasound components onto a single silicon chip, the hardware can emit and receive sound waves across a wide surface area at a fraction of the cost and size of legacy medical imaging systems.

Midjourney’s role centers on the data processing layer. The raw acoustic data captured by the Butterfly chips will be processed through Midjourney’s custom-trained AI models. Rather than generating images from text prompts, the AI is being engineered to reconstruct complex internal anatomical data into clear, accurate 3D visualizations for medical evaluation.

The Financials and Rollout Strategy

Under the terms of the $74 million agreement, Butterfly Network will receive an upfront technology licensing fee, followed by milestone-based development payments and ongoing revenue from hardware supply.

Midjourney Medical has outlined an ambitious deployment roadmap for the completed hardware, targeting the installation of 50,000 scanning units globally by 2031. The long-term business model operates on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) framework, where healthcare providers or wellness centers pay a recurring subscription fee to access the AI-driven diagnostic platform.

Regulatory and Market Realities

Despite the scale of the partnership, the technology faces significant hurdles before reaching commercial deployment. The proposed “Ultrasonic CT” device has not yet received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or equivalent international regulatory bodies.

Transitioning from digital image generation to clinical-grade medical diagnostics requires rigorous clinical trials to ensure safety, accuracy, and the elimination of “hallucinations”, a common challenge in generative AI models that cannot be tolerated in a healthcare setting.

As Midjourney Medical begins hardware development, the tech and medical industries will be watching closely to see if software-focused AI firms can successfully navigate the heavily regulated hardware landscape of global healthcare.
