Amazon Challenges SpaceX with 5,100-Satellite Plan for Direct-to-Phone Coverage

Amazon expands Project Kuiper with a 5,100-satellite initiative aimed at delivering direct-to-phone satellite connectivity.

The race to connect every corner of the Earth directly from space has reached a fever pitch. Amazon has officially escalated its orbital ambitions, filing a comprehensive application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy 5,105 low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites dedicated specifically to direct-to-device (D2D) cellular connectivity.

This strategic move sets up a direct, high-stakes showdown with SpaceX’s Starlink, positioning Amazon as a major contender in the next generation of global telecommunications infrastructure.

Traditional mobile networks rely on terrestrial cell towers, leaving vast geographic areas such as oceans, remote mountains, rural regions, and disaster zones without reliable signal. Direct-to-Device technology bridges this gap by turning low-Earth-orbit satellites into orbiting cell towers, allowing ordinary smartphones to connect directly to orbital networks without requiring specialized hardware or satellite dishes.

Amazon’s planned constellation aims to deliver a full suite of mobile services globally:
