Diversity and inclusion
How we bring a global range of voices into our reporting, and make Blockrora work for every reader.
Technology is built and used everywhere, so we try to report on it from everywhere. This statement sets out how we approach diversity, inclusion and accessibility in our journalism and on our website.
A global view
Blockrora is published from Cape Town and read around the world. We look beyond the usual technology centres, covering developments across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East alongside Silicon Valley, Europe and other established hubs, and we look for sources who reflect that range.
Who we quote
We aim for a wide range of voices in our reporting, across regions, genders, backgrounds and experience, and we notice whose expertise is missing from a story. Expertise, not status, decides who we quote.
Inclusive language
We write in plain, respectful language. We avoid stereotypes, describe people the way they describe themselves where we can, and mention characteristics such as race, gender, religion or disability only when they are relevant to the story.
Accessible by design
Our website is built to work for as many readers as possible:
- Pages work with screen readers and keyboard navigation, and images carry text descriptions.
- New stories can be listened to, read aloud by an AI voice, with controls for speed and chapters.
- Dark and light modes, readable type, and pages that load quickly on slow connections and older phones.
- Plain-language explanations of technical subjects, with key points at the top of most stories.
Contributors
We welcome pitches from writers and experts anywhere in the world, and we judge them on the quality of the idea and the reporting. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, nationality or background.
