Editorial standards and ethics
How we check facts, protect sources, correct mistakes, label sponsored content and use AI.
These are the standards Blockrora’s journalism is held to. They apply to everyone who writes or edits for us, and to every story we publish.
Independence
Our editors decide what we cover and how. Advertisers, sponsors, partners and our owner, Bitrora, do not review or approve stories before publication, and news coverage cannot be bought. When we report on Bitrora or its products, such as the payments app Solid, we disclose the connection in the story.
Accuracy and verification
- We rely on primary sources wherever we can: official documents, filings, data, research papers, code and on-the-record interviews.
- We confirm important claims with more than one source, and say clearly when something cannot be independently verified.
- We link to our sources so readers can check them.
- Figures such as prices, funding rounds and user numbers are checked against the original source, along with the date they applied.
- A company announcement, a social media post or a press release is never treated as proof on its own.
Sources
We name our sources whenever we can. We grant anonymity only when a source faces real risk, the information matters and cannot be obtained on the record, and an editor knows who the source is. When we do, we tell readers why the source was not named.
Fairness and right of reply
When a story makes significant claims about a person or organisation, we contact them before publication and give them a fair chance to respond. If they do not respond, we say so.
News, analysis and opinion
News reports what happened. Analysis explains why it matters, based on reporting. Opinion pieces argue a point of view and are published in our Opinion section, clearly labelled. Every headline must reflect the story beneath it.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it promptly and openly:
- We correct the error in the story.
- For anything more than a minor typo, we add a note at the end of the story explaining what changed, and the story shows the date it was updated.
- If an error is serious enough that a story should not stand, an editor decides whether to rewrite or withdraw it, and we explain why.
To report a mistake, use our contact form and choose “Correction request”, or email hello@blockrora.com with a link to the story.
Sponsored content and press releases
- Content paid for by a company, including sponsored articles and press releases, is labelled Sponsored.
- Sponsored content is kept out of the Morning Brief and Google News, and its links to other websites are marked as paid.
- Press releases are published as supplied by the issuer, who is responsible for their claims.
- Paying for sponsored content never buys news coverage or favourable reporting.
Our advertising page explains how sponsorship works.
Conflicts of interest
Writers tell their editor about anything that could affect, or appear to affect, their work, such as investments, other jobs or close relationships. Writers do not cover a company or crypto asset in which they have a meaningful financial interest without disclosing it to readers, and nobody may trade on information before it is published. We do not accept gifts or payment in exchange for coverage.
Use of artificial intelligence
- Our stories are reported and written by people.
- AI tools suggest key points, summaries and search descriptions. An editor reviews them, and changes them where needed, before they are published.
- Article audio is read by an AI voice. It is labelled as such, and the written story is always the authoritative version.
- Illustrations, including any made with AI tools, illustrate a subject. We never present them as photographs of real events.
- We do not put confidential source material into AI tools.
Questions about our standards
If you think a story falls short of these standards, tell us or email hello@blockrora.com. An editor reviews every complaint.
