OpenAI Strikes Back: Apple Accused of Stealing Unreleased AI Hardware Secrets

OpenAI confronts Apple over alleged intellectual property theft concerning unreleased artificial intelligence hardware.

Not long ago, Apple and OpenAI looked like natural allies, teaming up to bring cutting-edge AI directly to hundreds of millions of iPhones. Fast forward to today, and that friendly partnership has turned into a messy corporate street brawl.

What began as Apple suing OpenAI earlier this year for poaching key talent has just flipped on its head. In a fresh federal court filing in California, OpenAI fired right back, accusing a former employee of walking out the door with over 100 confidential files detailing an unreleased hardware gadget and pitching it directly to Apple’s top brass.

How Did We Get Here?

To understand how things got this heated, let’s rewind a few months.

Earlier this year, Apple struck first. The tech giant filed a lawsuit claiming several of its star engineers, including Tang Yew Tan, who used to oversee design for the iPhone and Apple Watch, and senior engineer Chang Liu, had left Cupertino for OpenAI and brought Apple’s proprietary hardware secrets along with them. At the time, Apple painted OpenAI as an opportunistic startup cutting corners to fast-track its new hardware division.

OpenAI strongly denied those claims. But now, it isn’t just playing defense; it’s going on the offensive.

The 100-File Leak

According to OpenAI’s latest court documents, an employee who jumped ship to join Apple sent more than 100 confidential documents regarding an upcoming, secret AI device to a personal account.

OpenAI claims that months later, this same employee presented the secret device concept to senior leadership inside Apple. The company points to Apple’s newly revealed HomeView smart-home display as a major red flag, warning the court that its private ideas might already be floating around Apple’s engineering labs, shaping products that will soon hit store shelves.

Apple’s Take: “We Found Nothing”

Apple, unsurprisingly, says the claims don’t hold water.

In letters between lawyers made public this week, Apple confirmed it ran an internal sweep of the employee’s work files and found zero evidence of OpenAI files sitting on its servers. The company also argued that the personal contact numbers OpenAI flagged as receiving the files don’t match any phone the employee uses for work at Apple.

Apple insists it has strict policies forbidding new hires from using material from old jobs, and pointed out that OpenAI ran straight to court instead of providing more details when asked.

Why Both Sides Are Ready to Fight

This lawsuit isn’t just about bruised egos or corporate policy; it’s about who will build the gadget that replaces or at least transforms the smartphone.

Both companies know text-based chatbots on a web browser are just the first step. The future belongs to dedicated AI devices: smart displays, wearable pins, intelligent earbuds, and ambient hubs that anticipate what’s needed without tapping an app.

The Core ClaimOpenAI poached key Apple veterans (like Tang Yew Tan) to rip off proprietary iPhone and Watch hardware secrets. An ex-employee stole 100+ files on an unreleased gadget and pitched the concept directly to Apple executives.
The Target ProductOpenAI’s hush-hush, upcoming consumer hardware projects.Apple’s new smart-home lineup, including the recently unveiled HomeView hub.
The Defense“We have strict hiring rules, and our servers show zero traces of OpenAI files.”“We built our hardware team fairly and did not take Apple’s proprietary designs.”

Things are moving quickly. A federal judge has already granted Apple early access to key files and greenlit speedy depositions for several former Apple employees now working at OpenAI.

While a full-blown jury trial isn’t expected until 2027, the mudslinging has already started. As the line between software and physical devices continues to blur, this court fight makes one thing clear: the battle to build the next generation of tech gadgets won’t just play out in stores; it’s going to be settled in a courtroom.
