OpenAI is rolling out some of its most significant safety updates to ChatGPT to date, introducing a new routing system powered by GPT-5 and a suite of parental controls designed to protect younger users. The move comes amid mounting concerns over AI safety and follows high-profile incidents where earlier models mishandled sensitive conversations, including a wrongful death lawsuit linked to a teenager’s suicide after months of interactions with ChatGPT.
Smarter Safeguards with GPT-5
At the center of this update is a safety routing system that actively detects emotionally charged or high-risk conversations. When flagged, ChatGPT temporarily shifts to GPT-5, a model specifically trained to handle sensitive topics with greater care.
Unlike earlier iterations, GPT-5 incorporates a mechanism called “safe completions”. This allows the model to respond constructively to delicate questions rather than simply refusing to engage or, worse, validating harmful thoughts.
Nick Turley, VP and head of the ChatGPT app, explained that routing occurs “on a per-message basis,” and that users can even check which model is active mid-conversation. This approach addresses criticism of GPT-4o, which, while popular for its speed and responsiveness, often leans toward being overly agreeable. That “sycophantic” behavior raised red flags after instances where the model reinforced rather than redirected harmful ideation.
By selectively deploying GPT-5 only when needed, OpenAI aims to strike a balance: keeping general conversations fast and fluid while ensuring difficult moments get the safest possible handling.
New Layer of Control for Parents
The second half of the update targets a growing user group: teenagers. OpenAI has introduced parental controls that enable families to customize and monitor their children’s interactions with ChatGPT.
The new features include the ability to:
- Set quiet hours when ChatGPT is unavailable.
- Disable voice mode and memory functions.
- Restrict access to image generation.
- Opt out of data being used for model training.
Teen accounts also benefit from built-in content protections, such as reduced exposure to graphic material and fewer depictions of extreme beauty standards.
Perhaps most notably, OpenAI has added a detection system for self-harm risk. If the system flags potentially concerning behavior, a trained human team reviews the case. Parents may then be contacted via email, text, and push notification, unless they’ve opted out. OpenAI also indicated it is developing processes to reach emergency services if a life-threatening situation is suspected and guardians cannot be reached.
While some critics argue these measures edge toward overreach, supporters see them as an important safeguard in an era where AI tools are increasingly embedded in young people’s lives.
A Balancing Act in Progress
The rollout is not without challenges. OpenAI has acknowledged that the system will sometimes raise false alarms or trigger safety routing in cases where it might not be needed. To address this, the company has given itself a 120-day window to fine-tune the balance between proactive safety and user autonomy.
As with most changes to AI systems, reactions have been mixed. Privacy advocates worry that too much monitoring could infantilize users, while safety experts argue that the stakes, especially when teens are involved, justify a cautious approach.

For OpenAI, these safety measures represent both a response to past criticism and a preview of where the company is headed: toward adaptive, context-sensitive AI models that can scale their responses depending on the situation. GPT-5’s role in safety-critical routing signals a growing trend of treating advanced AI not just as a conversational assistant, but as a system that must be reliable under pressure.
Whether these updates will satisfy both critics and supporters remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the days of a one-size-fits-all chatbot are over, and OpenAI is betting that smarter safeguards are the key to keeping ChatGPT useful and safe in the long run.
