TikTok’s New Nearby Feed Aims to Transform How Users Discover Local Places

A visual concept showing how TikTok’s Nearby Feed surfaces local, real-world discovery through location-aware recommendations.

TikTok is taking a decisive step into hyperlocal discovery with the launch of its new Nearby Feed, a dedicated tab designed to surface real-time content tied to a user’s surrounding area. Rolling out first in France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, the update marks one of TikTok’s most significant product shifts in 2025, blending digital discovery with real-world exploration.

Unlike TikTok’s global For You feed, which surfaces videos based on broad interest signals, the Nearby Feed narrows its focus to show users what’s happening around them: a newly opened restaurant, a neighborhood event gaining momentum, a creator documenting their city, or a spot that’s trending across town. The goal, TikTok says, is to strengthen local connections while supporting creators and small businesses with increased visibility.

A Local Discovery Layer Built Into the TikTok Experience

The Nearby Feed appears directly on the TikTok home screen, but its name dynamically changes based on a user’s location, reflecting city or regional identifiers instead of a generic “Nearby.” TikTok claims that this design helps users feel more connected to their immediate surroundings.

The ranking system powering the feed factors in:

  • Location signals
  • The content’s topic
  • Recency

TikTok is prioritizing content posted within the last 90 days, and videos must be public to qualify. Private accounts, under-18 creators, or posts restricted to “Friends” or “Only You” do not appear in the feed. This ensures the feature surfaces timely and contextually relevant content without compromising user safety.

Crucially, TikTok users can manually change their viewing area, useful for planning a holiday, researching a new city, or exploring potential travel hotspots. By selecting a different region, the feed re-curates itself instantly.

Optional Location Sharing, With Clear Privacy Boundaries

TikTok is framing the Nearby Feed as a choice-first feature, not an automatic tracking tool. Only users aged 18 or older can enable it, and location services can be switched on or off at any time.

When activated, TikTok may use GPS signals only while the app is in active use, a detail that aligns with both Apple and Android system-level permissions. iOS users will also see a visible indicator whenever TikTok accesses location data.

The company emphasizes that all data use complies with local regulations and TikTok’s existing privacy framework.

Supporting Local Creators, Culture, and Small Businesses

While TikTok’s global influence on trends is well documented, the Nearby Feed aims to bring that same discovery engine down to the street-level. Local businesses, tourism agencies, cultural institutions, and city-based creators can now appear more prominently to audiences nearby without needing paid promotion.

TikTok’s internal research supports the shift:
46% of UK TikTok users have visited a local shop, restaurant, or attraction because they discovered it on the platform.
This new feed strengthens that loop, potentially driving foot traffic and offline engagement in a more direct, measurable way.

A Digital Bulletin Board for Real-World Exploration

Conceptually, TikTok’s Nearby can be described as a dynamic, personalized bulletin board that updates constantly as creators document their surroundings. Instead of passively encountering global trends, users gain access to a curated stream of local moments, micro-cultures, and community highlights.

For travelers, it can function as a real-time city guide. For businesses, it becomes a discovery engine. For TikTok itself, it marks a broader evolution: expanding from entertainment into everyday utility.

A Shift in Social Discovery

TikTok’s push into hyperlocal content positions the platform as more than a global entertainment hub. With Nearby, it begins competing with services like Google Maps, Instagram Explore, Snap Map, and even traditional travel guides, only with the advantage of creator-driven storytelling.

By merging algorithmic discovery with physical context, TikTok is betting that the future of social browsing will be geographically anchored, community-based, and map-aware.

As the rollout expands beyond Europe, the Nearby Feed may become one of TikTok’s most influential features, reshaping how millions of people navigate, explore, and rediscover the cities they live in.
