Google is testing AI-powered article overviews on select publications’ Google News pages

Google has launched a commercial pilot program to test AI-generated summaries directly on the Google News pages of participating publishers. The initiative aims to assess whether AI-driven overviews can drive deeper audience engagement while compensating news organizations for the content used to train and generate these insights.

The Pilot Program and Partners

The search giant announced the program on Wednesday, revealing a list of high-profile initial partners. Participating publications include The Guardian, The Washington Post, El País, Der Spiegel, The Times of India, Folha, Infobae, Kompas, and The Washington Examiner.

Under the terms of this “commercial partnership program,” Google will provide direct payments to these publishers. This financial component appears designed to offset potential traffic declines, as users may consume the AI-generated summary without clicking through to the full article—a phenomenon often referred to as “zero-click” consumption.

New AI Features in Google News

The pilot introduces specific features exclusive to the participating publications’ Google News profile pages:

  • AI-Powered Article Overviews: Summaries designed to provide context before a user clicks.
  • Audio Briefings: An experimental feature for users who prefer listening to the news.

Google clarified that these AI overviews will only appear on the specific Google News pages of the partner publications, not across the broader Google News feed or standard Search results.

Gemini Integration and “Preferred Sources”

Beyond the pilot, Google announced broader updates to its news ecosystem. The company is partnering with agencies such as The Associated Press, Estadão, Antara, and Yonhap to inject real-time news data into its Gemini app, aiming to reduce hallucinations and improve the timeliness of AI responses.

Simultaneously, the “Preferred Sources” feature is rolling out globally to English-language users in the coming days. This tool allows users to manually select trusted publications to appear more frequently in the “Top Stories” search section.

Managing Subscriptions and Context

In a move to bridge the gap between open web search and paywalled content, Google will soon highlight links from a user’s active news subscriptions. These links will appear in a dedicated carousel within the Gemini app in the coming weeks, with future integration planned for AI Overviews and AI Mode.

To improve transparency, Google is also adding “contextual introductions” to inline links in AI Mode, offering brief explanations of why a specific link is relevant to the user’s query.

Wider Context & Impact

This pilot represents a strategic pivot for Google as it faces increasing pressure from publishers and regulators regarding the value exchange between search engines and content creators. By paying publishers directly for “participation” rather than just traffic, Google is testing a model that could define the future of the AI-web ecosystem.

What is Next: Expect close scrutiny of the engagement metrics from this pilot. If the data shows that AI summaries satisfy user intent without destroying publisher click-through rates (CTR), Google will likely expand the program to more regions in 2026. Conversely, if traffic drops significantly, the “direct payment” model may become a mandatory standard for keeping premium publishers in the AI ecosystem.
