Apple Rolls Out Global Age Verification Tools for Apps

A red apple with a bite taken out, surrounded by age categories: under 13, 13-17, and 18 plus.

Apple is shifting age verification to the OS level, using privacy-preserving signals to confirm users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore.

Apple has introduced new age verification tools for app developers worldwide as regulators tighten child safety requirements across digital platforms. The update allows apps to access privacy-preserving age signals directly from the operating system, helping them comply with emerging legal standards without collecting sensitive identity documents.

The rollout reflects growing global pressure on technology platforms to strengthen protections for minors.

Apple Introduces Privacy-Focused Age Assurance APIs

At the core of the update is the Declared Age Range API, available on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Instead of sharing a user’s full date of birth, the system provides developers with an age range signal, such as whether a user is under 13, between 13–17, or 18 and older. This allows apps to apply age-based restrictions while minimizing data exposure.

The framework integrates with Apple’s existing ecosystem controls, including Family Sharing and Screen Time, reinforcing parental oversight.

Apple’s approach centers on data minimization. The operating system acts as the intermediary, reducing the need for apps to independently collect and store age documents.

18+ App Restrictions in Select Markets

A significant enforcement change began on February 24, 2026.

From that date, users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore will be blocked from downloading apps rated 18+ unless they have been confirmed to be adults through reasonable methods. The App Store will perform this confirmation automatically before allowing the download.

This represents a shift toward distribution-level enforcement, where age restrictions are applied at the App Store layer rather than solely within individual apps.

Apple also notes that while the App Store will handle download-level confirmation in these regions, developers may still have separate legal obligations depending on local laws. The Declared Age Range API is intended to assist in meeting those requirements.

Why Apple Is Expanding Age Controls Now

Governments worldwide are increasing scrutiny of how digital platforms protect minors.

The UK’s Online Safety Act, the EU’s Digital Services Act, and new U.S. state-level social media laws have introduced stricter requirements around age-appropriate access, content moderation, and verification mechanisms.

For global app developers, navigating multiple regulatory regimes can be complex. Apple’s new framework offers a standardized method to apply age-based restrictions across markets.

OS-Level Compliance as a Broader Trend

Apple’s move reflects a wider shift in the technology industry. Operating systems and app marketplaces are increasingly functioning as compliance infrastructure layers.

By embedding age assurance within the OS and App Store:

  • Age signals are centralized
  • Data collection is limited
  • Enforcement becomes more consistent across regions

Other platforms have explored biometric age estimation and document uploads inside apps. Apple’s model instead focuses on system-level age range confirmation and App Store gating.

Impact and What Comes Next

For users, the changes mean additional age confirmation requirements in certain markets for 18+ apps starting February 2026.

For developers, the Declared Age Range API offers a structured and privacy-aligned method to implement age-based access controls.

As child safety regulation expands globally, platform-level verification tools are likely to become more common. The rollout in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore may signal how similar enforcement mechanisms could be applied in other jurisdictions over time.
