ChatGPT interface showcasing AI-powered shopping results across fashion and tech categories

OpenAI has taken a significant step in turning ChatGPT into more than a conversational AI. With its latest update, ChatGPT can help you shop, directly integrating a product search experience into the chatbot. This bold new feature positions OpenAI squarely in competition with Google, especially in the world of online product discovery.

So, what exactly has changed? Here’s a breakdown of ChatGPT’s shopping capabilities and what users can expect from the experience.

AI-Powered Shopping Starts Here

The new upgrade allows users to type natural-language queries like “show me gift ideas for a tech-savvy teen” or “find me a budget-friendly air fryer,” ChatGPT responds with visual product carousels. These displays include:

  • Product images and prices
  • Brief summaries generated by ChatGPT
  • Labels like “Most popular” or “Budget-friendly”
  • Direct links to purchase pages

These aren’t paid placements. OpenAI emphasizes that these are not ads; the AI selects results independently based on structured metadata.

Behind the Scenes: How ChatGPT Picks Products

The product listings come from third-party providers offering detailed item data, including descriptions, reviews, and prices. ChatGPT processes this information using the user’s query, preferences stored in memory (if enabled), and contextual signals to recommend relevant options.

Factors considered include:

  • Price range
  • Customer reviews
  • Product specifications
  • Specific criteria from the user (e.g., sizing, style, dislikes)

While product summaries and labels are AI-generated, star ratings and review counts come from providers, and OpenAI is transparent in stating these reviews may not be verified.

Not Just a Link List A Full Shopping Experience

What makes this feature feel like a true upgrade is how interactive and readable it is. ChatGPT condenses product details into easy-to-skim summaries, adds smart labels, and even includes review highlights. It creates a streamlined shopping assistant experience, allowing users to refine results by clarifying needs or preferences mid-chat.

For example, a user can say, “I’m looking for something under $50,” ChatGPT can adapt in real-time.

Pricing and Merchants

Product listings shown by ChatGPT may include prices sourced from third-party providers. The initial price displayed typically reflects the cost from the first merchant listed, but this may not be the lowest available price.

Users may see additional pricing options from other merchants offering the same product when they click on the price. However, due to the nature of external data, there can sometimes be delays in reflecting updates to merchant pricing or shipping terms. Estimated taxes and delivery fees may also differ from the final checkout cost.

OpenAI notes that it is actively working on faster update methods and encourages users to submit feedback if they spot inaccurate pricing or outdated details.

Where It’s Available

ChatGPT’s new shopping features are rolling out to GPT-4o and 4o-mini users, and are accessible to Pro, Plus, Free, and even logged-out users globally.

Soon, OpenAI says it will integrate its Memory feature with shopping for Pro and Plus users, allowing ChatGPT to reference past chats to make highly personalized product recommendations. These Memory-based features, however, won’t be available in the EU, U.K., Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein due to regional restrictions.

Monetization? Not Yet, But Maybe Soon

OpenAI states that it does not currently earn affiliate revenue or display ads in these results. CEO Sam Altman has, however, left the door open to “tasteful” advertising models in the future, such as affiliate links but not pay-for-placement search results.

This sets a clear tone: the focus is on utility, not ad dollars, at least for now.

What This Means for Google and You

By embedding shopping into the natural language interface of ChatGPT, OpenAI is making search more conversational, personalized, and visually engaging. For consumers, it means less time spent clicking through blue links, and more actionable recommendations right inside a chat.

It also signals OpenAI’s intent to expand beyond general-purpose AI into vertical-specific domains, with e-commerce being just the beginning.

ChatGPT’s shopping upgrade isn’t just a shiny new feature; it’s a shift in how we think about online search. Blending AI with commerce, OpenAI is redefining the user journey from intent to purchase.

As ChatGPT continues to evolve, expect the lines between assistant, advisor, and e-commerce guide to blur even further.
