OpenAI’s GPT-5.3-Codex introduces agentic AI with full computer use and accelerated code execution.

OpenAI has officially released GPT-5.3-Codex, a new “agentic” model designed to move beyond code generation toward full-spectrum computer-based task execution. The model introduces 25% faster performance and the ability to operate complex software environments autonomously.

A Shift from Autocomplete to Autonomous Agency

The launch of GPT-5.3-Codex marks a significant evolution in the Codex series. While previous iterations primarily functioned as coding assistants, the 5.3 version is designed to handle the entire software lifecycle, including debugging, monitoring, and deployment.

Key to this release is the integration of the coding precision found in GPT-5.2-Codex with the broad reasoning and professional knowledge of the base GPT-5.2 model. This allows the system to engage in “long-horizon” tasks, projects that stretch over hours or days, while maintaining context and adapting its plan as it encounters errors.

State-of-the-Art Benchmarks and Computer Use

OpenAI reported that GPT-5.3-Codex has set new industry records on several critical benchmarks:

  • OSWorld-Verified: Achieved 64.7%, approaching the human baseline of 72% for navigating visual desktop environments and using professional applications.
  • Terminal-Bench 2.0: Scored 77.3%, highlighting a massive leap in command-line proficiency compared to the 64.0% seen in GPT-5.2-Codex.
  • SWE-Bench Pro: Reached 56.8%, establishing it as a leader in real-world software engineering across multiple programming languages.

Notably, the model achieved these results using fewer tokens than its predecessors, indicating improved efficiency in how it processes and generates complex solutions.

Interactive Collaboration and Steering

A primary feature of the new model is its “interactive collaborator” mode. Users can now monitor the agent’s progress in real-time through the Codex app and “steer” the model mid-task. Instead of waiting for a final output, a developer can ask questions or adjust the model’s approach without resetting the session context. This shift aligns the AI more closely with the role of a colleague than a static tool.

The First “High Capability” Cybersecurity AI

For the first time under its Preparedness Framework, OpenAI has classified a model as having “High capability” for cybersecurity tasks. GPT-5.3-Codex was directly trained to identify software vulnerabilities.

To manage the dual-use risks associated with these capabilities, OpenAI is launching the “Trusted Access for Cyber” pilot program. This initiative aims to place advanced defensive tools in the hands of verified security researchers and infrastructure maintainers while implementing strict automated monitoring to prevent misuse.

Built with Itself: Recursive Development

In a notable disclosure, OpenAI revealed that GPT-5.3-Codex was instrumental in its own creation. Early versions of the model were used by OpenAI engineers to debug the training pipeline, manage deployment stages, and diagnose test evaluations. This recursive process reportedly accelerated the development cycle and optimized the serving stack on NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 systems.

Impact & What’s Next

The arrival of GPT-5.3-Codex signals a move toward “AI-orchestrated” workflows. For tech teams, the 25% speed increase and enhanced intent recognition mean that AI can now be delegated more significant “glue work,” such as writing documentation and setting up CI/CD pipelines.

The model is currently available to paid ChatGPT users via the Codex app, CLI, and IDE extensions. While API access is not yet public, OpenAI has committed $10 million in API credits to accelerate cyber defense research, suggesting that a broader rollout is imminent.
