The high-stakes race to a public listing: An editorial concept exploring the market rivalry between OpenAI and Anthropic.

The artificial intelligence revolution has officially entered its most volatile chapter yet. What began as an ideological rift in a Silicon Valley research lab has escalated into an all-out corporate war on Wall Street.

In the span of just one historic week, the two titans of generative AI, Anthropic and OpenAI, both filed confidential paperwork for initial public offerings (IPOs) in the United States. Anthropic fired the first shot with a confidential filing following a massive funding round that valued the company at a staggering $965 billion. Not to be outdone, OpenAI followed suit days later, targeting an unprecedented $1 trillion valuation for its public market debut.

This isn’t just a race for capital; it is a bitter, deeply personal, and strategically cutthroat campaign to dictate how the world values the future of intelligence. This simultaneous rush has sent Wall Street into a frenzy, marking a massive transition in which rapid market shifts and high-stakes tech standoffs will now play out under public scrutiny.

Here is the inside story of the AI Cold War, the accounting feuds, and the personal friction driving the rush to the public markets.

1. The Week Silicon Valley Changed Forever

For years, both OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT) and Anthropic (the creator of Claude) operated with backing from private venture capital firms and tech conglomerates. But the private game has grown too small for their trillion-dollar ambitions.

The market sprint intensified on May 20, when Elon Musk’s SpaceX filed a prospectus disclosing audited financials for its combined SpaceX-xAI entity. Fearing they would lose the narrative to Musk, the timelines for OpenAI and Anthropic contracted aggressively.

Anthropic submitted its confidential IPO paperwork, positioned securely on its fresh valuation following a capital injection. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, moved with equal ferocity, pushing through a confidential filing.

Investment banks caught in the crossfire, handling pieces of both blockbusters, have reportedly been forced to erect strict internal firewalls and information barriers between their deal teams to prevent catastrophic data leaks. Executives from both AI labs are ruthlessly pressing their advisers for any scrap of insight into what the rival camp is planning.

2. Financial Warfare: The Battle of the Books

The race to hit the trading floor first isn’t just about prestige; it’s about setting the rules of the game. Whichever company goes public first will establish the benchmark for how Wall Street evaluates frontier AI financials.

This reality has sparked a fierce dispute over accounting methods. OpenAI has launched an internal campaign to frame Anthropic’s financial narrative as a mirage. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser issued a company-wide memo asserting that Anthropic’s financials are “inflated” by billions of dollars.

The core of the dispute comes down to Gross vs. Net Revenue:

  • Anthropic’s Model: Anthropic practices gross revenue accounting. It logs the full amount customers pay for its Claude AI services as revenue, even though a significant portion of that cash is subsequently routed back to its cloud and distribution partners, Amazon and Alphabet (Google). Anthropic defends this, stating it acts as the “principal” in the transaction.
  • OpenAI’s Model: OpenAI utilizes net revenue reporting. After paying its primary infrastructure partner, Microsoft, OpenAI only logs the remaining net profit on its books.

“One reason for Anthropic to try to beat OpenAI out to the public market is that they will get to set the agenda for how a frontier model reports financials,” notes Gil Luria, a leading tech analyst at DA Davidson. If Anthropic lists first and Wall Street accepts its gross accounting methodology, it secures a massive valuation advantage. OpenAI is desperate to ensure investors view Anthropic’s numbers through a more critical lens.

3. “Figure It Out”: Internal Tensions Boil Over

The frantic timeline required to pull off a trillion-dollar IPO has caused immense friction inside the executive suites.

At OpenAI, Sam Altman reportedly clashed bitterly with Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar over whether the company could realistically meet the stringent auditing and regulatory requirements of a public listing on such a compressed schedule. When Friar voiced concerns about the breakneck pace, Altman allegedly delivered an ultimatum: figure it out, or find different bankers and lawyers who can. Though OpenAI’s leadership has since presented a united front to the public, the reality is clear: Altman views any delay as a tactical defeat to Anthropic.

4. A Deeply Personal Feud Goes Public

To understand why this race is so uniquely bitter, one has to look back to late 2020. Dario Amodei, then OpenAI’s Vice President of Research, walked out of the company alongside a core group of researchers. They left due to profound disagreements regarding Sam Altman’s commercial direction and a perceived abandonment of AI safety protocols. They founded Anthropic as a safety-first “public benefit corporation.”

What began as a quiet corporate divorce has devolved into highly visible animosity:

  • The AI Summit Drama: At the India AI Summit in New Delhi, the tension between Altman and Amodei became the talk of the tech world when the two CEOs explicitly refused to join hands or stand shoulder to shoulder for a standard global leaders’ group photo.
  • The Super Bowl Smear: Altman publicly slammed Anthropic’s high-profile Super Bowl commercials, labeling them “deceptive” and claiming they misrepresented OpenAI’s product roadmap regarding advertising on ChatGPT.
  • The Pentagon Clash: Amodei fired back, accusing Altman of leveraging Anthropic’s regulatory disputes with the Pentagon to surreptitiously win over government defense contracts for OpenAI.

The Industry Takeaway: Wall Street’s Ultimate Test

For the broader tech ecosystem, this traditional equity showdown signals a massive transition. The “move fast and break things” era of private AI development is ending. By entering the public markets, both OpenAI and Anthropic are trading private control for relentless public scrutiny.

They will no longer just be answering to a small circle of elite venture capitalists or tech evangelists; they will be answering to retail investors, pension funds, and quarterly earnings calls.

As Anastasios Angelopoulos, CEO of AI benchmarking firm Arena, puts it: “It’s all-out war between these guys. Every time there’s a new release from Anthropic, the bet will be that OpenAI is soon to follow and vice versa.”

The AI Cold War has moved from the server rooms to the trading floors. Whichever titan rings the opening bell first may very well claim the crown for the future of artificial intelligence.
