Anthropic has introduced a personal finance tool for Claude that lets users connect their bank and credit card accounts to track spending. Powered by data network Plaid, the feature turns Claude into a practical budgeting assistant that reads real account data rather than just offering generic money advice.

The update puts Anthropic in direct competition with other AI labs that rolled out similar finance tools earlier this year. Unlike many standard budgeting apps, Anthropic says Claude will not feature ads, sponsored loan offers, or credit card pitches, keeping the user's answers free of sales incentives.

Everyday Questions and Spending Checks

Once accounts are connected, users can ask Claude normal, everyday questions about where their money went each month. Claude will group expenses into simple categories like groceries, rent, utilities, and shopping. Users can then ask natural follow-up questions to see if they are spending more than usual or living beyond their monthly income.

The tool can also point out small financial issues that are easy to overlook. Claude can scan transactions to catch duplicate charges, hidden bank fees, or monthly bills that keep creeping up in price. For users carrying balances, it can explain terms like annual percentage rates (APR) and calculate the total interest paid on a card over the past year.

Privacy Safeguards and Availability

Connecting private bank details to an AI naturally raises security questions. Anthropic stated that Claude’s access is read-only, meaning the tool cannot move money, transfer funds, or manage investments. The data Claude can view is also restricted to basic details, including bank names, account types, the last four digits of an account number, balances, and up to two years of past transactions.

Anthropic confirmed that conversations within the personal finance tool will not be used to train its AI models. The beta feature is rolling out this week to paying Claude subscribers in the United States across the Pro, Max, and Ultra plans, following the company's recent releases for legal and professional finance teams.
