Websites Can Now Block You: Why Apple’s Latest iCloud Update Weakens ‘Hide My Email’

Apple is planning a structural shift to its suite of consumer privacy features, a move that could inadvertently hand centralized websites and applications more leverage over user anonymity.

In a recent update shared with developers, the tech giant announced that later this summer, it will unify the email domains used by both Sign in with Apple and iCloud+ Hide My Email under a single, shared domain: @private.icloud.com.

While the consolidation streamlines backend operations for Apple, privacy advocates and technical communities are sounding the alarm. By explicitly tagging private aliases with a designated subdomain, Apple is stripping away the “stealth” advantage that made the feature highly effective.

From Hidden to Flagged: The Technical Shift

To understand why this change weakens user privacy, it helps to look at how Hide My Email currently operates.

Presently, when an iCloud+ subscriber generates a random email address to sign up for a service, the alias is generated using the standard @icloud.com domain. Because these aliases blend in perfectly with ordinary, non-private Apple email addresses, third-party platforms have no automated way of knowing whether a user is hiding their true identity or simply using their primary email.

Websites hoping to harvest real user data for marketing, tracking, or user profiling could not block these anonymous sign-ups without blocking the entire base of legitimate iCloud email users, a trade-off few businesses are willing to make.

Under the new system, Sign in with Apple (which previously used @privaterelay.appleid.com) and Hide My Email will both issue new addresses ending strictly in @private.icloud.com.

The Risk of Corporate Gatekeeping

By segregating private aliases into their own clearly defined subdomain, Apple has made it simple for any website or application to identify anonymous users. Platforms that mandate real-identity registration can now easily add @private.icloud.com to their email validation blocklists or suppression rules.

For users navigating an increasingly centralized web, this opens the door to widespread restrictions. Online platforms ranging from e-commerce sites to subscription networks often rely on persistent email identities to track user behavior across the internet or prevent users from exploiting trial periods. With a distinct domain name attached to these privacy tools, companies can simply refuse service to anyone utilizing Apple’s relay system.

Though Apple has explicitly advised developers and email service providers to update their systems to accept the new domain and avoid domain-based filtering, compliance is entirely voluntary. Platforms driven by data monetization have little incentive to cooperate.

A Broader Trend Against Digital Anonymity

The timing of Apple’s shift aligns with a broader, systemic tension between consumer-facing privacy features and mounting external pressures. Governments worldwide are intensifying scrutiny around online anonymity, pushing platforms to implement stricter age-verification, anti-fraud, and identity-tracking protocols.

Recent legal disclosures have also highlighted the friction tech giants face when maintaining stealth features. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Apple complied with federal law enforcement requests to identify a user who had utilized Hide My Email in a high-profile threat investigation. Making anonymous accounts structurally easier to separate from general user traffic appears to be a concession to an operating environment where absolute stealth is increasingly difficult to defend.

What This Means for Users

According to Apple, existing aliases generated under the legacy domains will continue to function and forward mail to users’ primary inboxes without interruption. The change will apply only to new addresses generated after the update rolls out later this summer.

However, for privacy-conscious users looking to minimize their digital footprint, the update alters the utility of the feature. Instead of blending seamlessly into the crowd, utilizing Apple’s native tools will now explicitly signal to a platform that you are choosing to withhold your data, leaving the choice to grant or deny access entirely in the hands of centralized web masters.
