Meet Your New Co-Worker: Anthropic Launches ‘Claude Tag’ Inside Slack

Anthropic introduces 'Claude Tag' integration within Slack workspaces.

Anthropic has officially launched Claude Tag, shifting its AI assistant out of isolated private direct messages (DMs) and dropping it directly into shared team channels as an always-on, collaborative “co-worker.” The update transforms the large language model (LLM) from a solitary search tool into a multiplayer workspace experience. By simply typing @Claude in any Slack thread, team members can now assign complex, multi-step tasks to the AI, allowing it to work publicly where an entire department can see, edit, and collaborate on the output in real time.

Instead of treating artificial intelligence like a private digital assistant, Claude Tag builds a singular “identity” within a shared channel. It effectively means everyone on the team can view the AI’s ongoing tasks and pick up half-finished conversations or projects exactly where a previous colleague left off.

“Instead of a private back-and-forth, Claude Tag shows up in the open… making AI multiplayer.” — Rob Seaman, General Manager of Slack.

How “Multiplayer” AI Works in the Workplace

Historically, integrating AI into platforms like Slack meant communicating with a private bot. If you needed a document summarized or code reviewed, you did it in a private window and pasted the results back to your team.

Claude Tag fundamentally rewrites this workflow. It functions through a few core capabilities that mimic a real human colleague:

  • Persistent Channel Memory: Each Slack channel gets its own unique, isolated Claude identity. The AI continuously reads the room, tracks conversation history, and absorbs the context of ongoing projects. This means you don’t have to prompt the AI from scratch every time you need its help; it already knows what the team is working on.
  • Asynchronous Execution: When you tag @Claude and assign a task, the AI breaks the request down into logical stages. It then works autonomously in the background for hours or days, leaving you free to focus on other priorities until it returns with a finished product.
  • Ambient Behavior: When toggled on, Claude doesn’t just wait to be spoken to. It actively monitors permitted data channels and will proactively bump threads that have gone quiet, flag critical cross-department updates, or remind users about unresolved assignments.

Built for Complex Workflows

Anthropic isn’t just pitching this as a neat gimmick; it is already running a massive chunk of its own infrastructure on the tool. The company revealed that its internal version of Claude Tag currently generates a staggering 65% of its product team’s code.

Beyond software development, the tool is designed to integrate natively with whatever data sources and digital repositories an organization uses. For instance, a product manager could link Claude to their email and engineering codebases, instructing it to monitor for urgent client feedback and automatically flag bugs or pull requests directly in Slack.

Balancing Enterprise Control and Privacy

Bringing an omnipresent AI into group chats naturally raises security questions. To counter this, Anthropic has built granular administrative guardrails.

Memories and access rights are tightly scoped on a channel-by-channel basis. Administrators can ensure that a Claude instance assigned to a Legal channel, for example, will never share its confidential data or tool permissions with a Claude instance sitting in the Engineering or Marketing channels.

Furthermore, to prevent the “always-listening” ambient AI from racking up astronomical cloud bills, companies can set strict token-consumption limits for the entire organization or down to the specific channel level. If a bot hits its maximum allowed budget, it simply pauses and declines further work until the next cycle.

The Horizon for Collaborative Agents

The beta rollout is officially live for businesses on Claude Enterprise and Claude Team plans. It serves as a direct replacement for the legacy Claude Slack app, with a complete transition scheduled for early August.

While the feature is starting on Slack, Anthropic has made it clear that this is only the first step. The company plans to roll out the “Tag” framework across other major enterprise communication hubs like Microsoft Teams and Google Chat in the near future.

As tech giants rush to claim dominance over the enterprise market, Claude Tag represents a massive leap toward a future where “human-AI hybrid teams” are no longer a sci-fi concept, but the standard blueprint for everyday business operations.
