Would You Pay for a Purple Chat Bubble? WhatsApp Trials New ‘Cosmetic’ Subscription

Could premium customisation be coming to WhatsApp? A conceptual look at the trialled purple chat bubbles.

For over a decade, WhatsApp has been the gold standard for free, accessible communication. Since Meta (then Facebook) scrapped its $1 annual fee in 2016, the app has remained largely “pay-wall free” for the average user. But that’s about to change.

WhatsApp is currently testing a new optional subscription tier, tentatively referred to as “WhatsApp Plus.” Before you worry about your messages being held for ransom, take a breath: Meta isn’t charging for the basics. Instead, they are betting that you’ll pay for a bit of flair.

Style Over Substance?

The new subscription model, which has recently surfaced in beta versions of the app, is described by industry insiders as “mainly cosmetic.” While WhatsApp has traditionally been strict about its minimalist green-and-white aesthetic, the Plus tier unlocks a world of personalization.

What’s included in the box?

  • Custom Themes: Subscribers can choose from 18 new chat themes, ranging from “Royal Purple” and “Vibrant Blue” to “Forest Green.”
  • Alternative Icons: Tired of the green phone bubble? The update includes 14 alternative app icons to match your home screen aesthetic.
  • Exclusive Sounds: Access to 10 unique ringtones and custom notification sounds for specific contact lists.
  • Power-User Organization: Perhaps the most “functional” perk is the ability to pin up to 20 chats to the top of your inbox, a massive jump from the current limit of three.
  • Premium Extras: Animated sticker packs with special effects and the ability to create custom chat lists with unique notification settings.

Why Now? The Meta Pivot

This move isn’t happening in a vacuum. Meta is facing a massive bill for its AI infrastructure, estimated to reach upwards of $135 billion annually, and is looking to diversify its revenue beyond just advertising.

By launching WhatsApp Plus, Meta is taking a leaf out of the playbooks of Telegram Premium and Snapchat+. These platforms have successfully proven that a significant segment of users is willing to pay a small monthly fee for “vanity” features and quality-of-life improvements.

Moreover, by keeping the subscription “cosmetic,” WhatsApp sidesteps potential regulatory headaches in Europe regarding “pay or consent” models. Since the core service, including messaging, voice calls, and end-to-end encryption, remains free, users aren’t being forced to pay to maintain their privacy.

What Will It Cost?

Pricing appears to be following a “purchasing power” model, meaning it will vary by region:

  • Europe: Approximately €2.49/month.
  • Mexico: Roughly $1.60 (MX$29).
  • Pakistan: Approximately $0.82 (229 PKR).
  • USA (Projected): Likely around $2.99/month.

To sweeten the deal, Meta is expected to offer a one-month free trial for eligible testers before the global rollout.

The Blockrora Take

For a platform like WhatsApp, which boasts over 2 billion users, even a small conversion rate could generate hundreds of millions in high-margin revenue. While some may scoff at the idea of paying for a purple chat bubble, the success of similar tiers on other platforms suggests that “digital status” and organization tools are highly valued.

For now, the “WhatsApp you know” remains free. But for those who want their digital workspace to feel a little more like home, the green gates are finally opening for a small fee.
